A One-of-A-Kind Dining Table

There are certain timbers that stop you in your tracks the moment you see them. Blackheart Sassafras is one of those. Its striking charcoal veining and unexpected soft tonal variations create a natural artwork within the grain.

I am proud to announce that this rare Blackheart Sassafras Round Dining Table Eumundi is now available. You can find it at David Suters Timbercraftsman Gallery Showroom in the heart of Eumundi.

A Timber With Real Presence

Blackheart Sassafras has long been a favourite for furniture makers for generations. Its natural appearance is bold and sophisticated. When working with this rare Tasmanian timber, I try to stay out of the way. My job is to tell the timber’s story revealing its intrinsic beauty with respect.

Handcrafted in my Eumundi workshop using sustainably sourced timber this table is my latest studio release. The design is simple and contemporary, bringing people together in a warm inviting way. The round shape encourages people to sit, talk, and stay a while. The focus is the timber itself, with the grain being the hero, not decoration or excess detail.

A Round Table Designed for Connection

The shape of a table changes how we interact. I chose a round design to encourage people to sit, talk, and stay a while.

  • Contemporary Lines: The design is simple and clean.
  • Focus on Grain: No excess detail distracts from the wood.
  • Social Shape: Every seat is the best seat in the house.

Good Work Takes Time

Working with timber this rare requires patience. I hand-select each board to ensure the top feels balanced. I match the grain meticulously so the table reads as a single composition.

I use traditional joinery throughout. This ensures the table remains stable for a lifetime. The finish is furniture-grade quality. It protects the wood without hiding its natural warmth or movement.

Letting the Timber Lead the Way

As I often say, “My job as a craftsman isn’t to overpower the timber… it’s to listen to it and bring forward what’s already there.” This table is a perfect example of that philosophy. The grain guided the design from the very first cut.

“When someone takes home a piece this distinctive, I hope they feel the same sense of wonder I felt when I first saw the raw timber.”

Crafted slowly, finished carefully, and made to last for generations, this is a dining table with genuine presence, designed to become part of your family’s story.
